It’s now almost 2 years since my journey into ‘what does it really take to be happy and successful’ began and it’s been one hell of a wild ride.
For the whole of that time period, apart from my coaching clients and some side projects, this has been my full time “job”. Not a day has passed in that period that I didn’t go to work. What they say is true though. When it’s something you love and are passionate about, it’s not really work.
When you dedicate over 700 days of your life to researching a topic and delving deep into areas you’ve never waded into before, well, you are going to be in for a few surprises. I’ve certainly had many of those!
I won’t cover old ground of how I ended up on this journey, you can read all about that in the Fearless Life Manifesto, but to sum it up in a couple of words it was death and results. The death of my father and the implications for my own mortality was the primary driver for me to take action. The lack of results and happiness I saw people experiencing in their lives was the main motivation behind the questions I was asking.
Questions such as:
What does it take to be truly happy? What does it take to feel successful? What stops us from having the things we want it life? Why do we keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again? What is our purpose and how do we find it? How do we get clear on what we really want?
I’m sure you’ve asked yourself many, if not all of those questions, at some point in your life.
When looking for the answers to these questions we usually step into and between two worlds – the personal development world and the spiritual world. One’s all about getting stuff and making things happen, the other is all about letting go of stuff and letting things happen.
I’ve always been a great believer in balance and that a mixture of ingredients is required to make the perfect cake. No one method, belief system, modality or tactic is the complete answer. If that was the case, then we would see a least a huge part of our society “living the dream” and we do not.
So I started at one end of the scale, the personal development world, and moved along program by program, book by book, course by course, mentor by mentor, to the other end, the spiritual world. This wasn’t a completely linear journey, I flitted between the two often and many times ending up in places that don’t really fit into either category.
In the business/entrepreneur world I used to operate in there was a 90/95% failure rate – only 5-10% of people would successfully create a business built around their interests and sustain it. I wanted to know why there was such high failure rate, because 100% of them wanted the outcome.
I started to see the same in the personal development world. Only a very small percentage of people who attended courses, bought programs or read self-help books saw long lasting change and moved towards their idea of the perfect life. They would do program after program, get motivated for short periods of time only to fall back into their regular patterns. I’ve done this myself many times too.
Looking back with the advantage of 2 years of research and testing behind me, the reason for this all seems so obvious now.
I’m sure it will come as no surprise to anyone reading this that our reality is made up of both conscious and unconscious (or sub-conscious) thought processes. The fact is that the conscious part only accounts for roughly 5-10% of the approximate 70,000 thoughts we have in any one day. The rest, the remaining 90-95% of thoughts we process are carried out by the sub-conscious mind and totally unaware to us.
Interesting…so we see people attempting to get what they want in life through predominately conscious thought processes and methods, positive thinking, goal setting, tactics and strategy etc, and we see a ‘success rate’ more or less equivalent to the percentage of our thoughts that live in that realm!
Very little time or focus is spent dealing with the 90-95% of thoughts that take place in the unconscious side of our reality. It’s clear to see why we see such low rates of true transformation and change. If you are trying to overcome old habits or form new ones through pure conscious effort alone you are in for a struggle.
We can see the same problem elsewhere.
Most of the personal development world produces and sells programs with the sole focus of changing the physical world to match how you would like it to be. Our relationships, wealth, health, possessions etc. That would be great if we lived in a purely physical existence but we don’t, we also exist at a metaphysical level. In the same way that our conscious mind is a small part of the whole picture in how we create our reality, what we relate to as the physical world is also similarly insignificant in terms of the implications and now known facts of our metaphysical existence.
We spend the majority of our focus trying to change our conscious thought processes and the physical world around us but spend most of our time operating on unconscious thought and living in a metaphysical world.
Is it any wonder why we see such little progress??!!
If you want true transformation, if you really want to move towards the life you desire and to find that peace and happiness, you need to work on both the conscious and unconscious minds while at the same time understanding the nature of the metaphysical world that we live in.
Now, talk of metaphysics may seem a tad daunting and when you delve into the subject as I have it can become overwhelming at times but all you really need is a basic understanding of the concepts. This along with a greater understanding of how you think and create your reality is the key to open the door you’ve banging your head on for so long.
Explaining this further along with everything else I’ve learnt and discovered in the past 24 months lies well outside the scope of a blog post. So, I’ve decided to do a live video call where I’ll cover these topics and show you how to apply them to your life very soon. I’ll also be able to take your questions and offer advice on how you can apply some of these concepts to areas you would like to change.
To be notified when this live call will take place, simply join the Fearless Life Project for free by putting your name and email address in the box below this post and press submit. As soon as I set the date (sometime in the next 4 weeks I hope), I’ll shoot you an email.
In the meantime, I’d love to hear any thoughts or questions you may have in the comments below.
Until next time,
